Create and manage departments

Organize your company by creating and managing departments

Purpose 

This article describes how to create and manage departments for your organization from the Company Settings page.  

Audience 

This article is directed toward administrators. 

Notes

  • You cannot delete a department from the Departments page. To delete a department, reach out to support.

  • If/when support deletes a department, per your request, any data that uses that department will be affected.

  • Instead of deleting/deactivating a department, you can replace a department with another department (that is, rename a department) from the Departments page.

  • The General department is the default department automatically added for your organization; it is fixed and cannot be deleted or modified.

    • By default, all employees are assigned to the General department.

    • With a subscription, you can assign an employee to multiple departments (up to 20). Review our help article on this topic to learn more about assigning employees to multiple departments and editing employee department assignments.

Create a department

To add a department, take the following steps:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Company Settings > Employees > Departments.

  2. Select Add Department at the top-right of the page (Figure 1). This brings up an Add Department dialog.

  3. Enter the name of the department and the external ID, if applicable, and select Save.

  4. Your department should now appear on the Departments page.

Note: The External IDs field [optional] is only available if you have not enabled a general ledger integration that is syncing departments.

Edit a department

To edit a department, take the following steps:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Company Settings > Employees > Departments.

  2. Locate the department you want to change, then select the pencil icon at the far-right of the row. This brings up an Edit Department dialog (Figure 2).

  3. Make any needed changes, and then select Save.
